8 Signs That You Need to See a Dentist

On May 29, 2020 Written and Reviewed by JDC Content Committee

Time to see your dentist, hygienist and office team at Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics

Your oral health is important, as it impacts your overall health. Sometimes it’s difficult to know whether or not you should visit your dentist, but there are often signs telling you that it’s time. Here’s a handy list.

1. You’re in Pain – See Your Dentist

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. Ignoring pain and hoping it will go away isn’t the best idea because it generally gets worse. If you’re experiencing pain or swelling in your mouth, face, or neck, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

2. Issues with Your Gums or Tongue

Your gums are often the first indicator of mouth problems. If you notice that your gums are puffy or that they bleed when you brush and floss, you should let your dentist know to prevent bigger issues. Spots and sores in your mouth can also indicate problems.

3. You Don’t Feel Good About Your Smile

Do you make a habit of hiding your smile? Whether you’re missing a tooth or dislike the color of your teeth, don’t go through life hiding behind your hands. The team at your dental office wants you to have a smile you can be  proud of, and they will help you achieve it.

4. You Have A Chronic Medical Condition

Some medical conditions are closely tied to dental issues. If you have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, eating disorders, are HIV positive, or receive certain medical treatments (like chemotherapy), you should see a dentist regularly so they can monitor your oral health.

5. You’ve Had Previous Dental Work

Dental work needs regular checks to ensure it continues to function properly. Fillings, crowns, dental implants, and dentures may require upkeep, so keep those follow-ups!

6. You’re Expecting

Pregnant women experience a lot of changes, and their oral health can be compromised. It’s safe and necessary for women to follow up with their dentists during pregnancy.

7. You Use Tobacco Products

Tobacco use can affect your oral health in several ways, regardless of how you use it. Talk with your dentist about your habits so they can watch for signs of common tobacco-related issues, like oral cancer.

8. It’s Time to See Your Dentist for a Checkup

Preventative care checkups are crucial to your oral health because your dentist can catch issues early on and prevent bigger problems. Plus, it always feels good to have a professional teeth cleaning!

If you’re experiencing any of the above signs or know it’s time for your check-up, find the Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics office nearest you and book an appointment online.
