Give Your Kids A Healthy Start!

“Children’s teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and a healthy smile is important to a child’s self-esteem,” says Dr. David Silber, from Jefferson Dental Clinic. “With proper care, a balanced diet and regulary dental visits, their teeth can remail healthy and strong.”

Celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month by helping your kids protect their teeth. Reduce their risk of tooth decay by:

Encouraging good habits

Remind your children to brush and floss twice a day for 2 minutes. Download a “2 minutes 2x” coloring sheet from the American Dental Association, or this child-friendly checklist.

Watching what they eat

  • Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed with meals. Saliva production increases during meals and helps neutralize acid production and rinses food particles from the mouth.
  • Limit between-meal snacks. If kids have a craving offer them nutritious foods.
  • Offer sugarless gum. When chewed after a meal, it can actually be good for your child’s oral health, as it increases saliva flow and helps wash away food and decay-producing acid.
  • Monitor beverage consumption. Don’t let your kids have soft drinks all day long. Make sure they also choose water and low-fat milk.

Scheduling regular dental visits

Not only can your dentist catch small problems before they become big issues, but by taking your kids to the dentist on a regular basis, you’re telling them that caring for their teeth is important. It’s a lesson they’ll carry with them for life.
