Dental X-rays for
Accurate Diagnosis

Advanced dental imaging helps us diagnose concerns
early and plan precise, preventive care.

What Are Dental X-rays?

This includes evaluating the health of the jawbone, the internal structure of teeth, and the integrity of existing fillings, crowns, or implants.

Dental X-rays play a vital role in better preventive oral care. They help to identify cavities, infections, bone loss, impacted teeth, and developmental concerns at an early stage when treatment is simpler and more affordable.
Sometimes, the most critical dental concerns hide quietly beneath the surface, where a visual inspection cannot reach. To ensure your dental care remains precise, your dentists must see what the human eye can’t. That’s where dental X-rays play an essential role.

Dental X-rays (radiographs) are a crucial diagnostic tool. They allow your provider to understand what is happening beyond the surface.

What to Expect During a Dental
X-ray at Jefferson Dental

Dental X-rays are a quick and comfortable process that delivers accurate results.
1

Quick Preparation

Our team places a small protective lead apron to shield your body. We position the sensor comfortably inside your mouth for accurate imaging.

2

Precise Positioning

We guide you to bite down on a small holder to capture the correct angle. This ensures clear and detailed images with minimal retakes.

3

Faster Imaging

The X-ray machine briefly captures the image in a few seconds. You remain still for a moment while we complete the scan.

4

Immediate Review

Your dentist reviews the digital images right away on a screen. This allows for prompt discussion of any findings.

5

Clear Next Steps

We explain what the images show in simple terms. If needed, we outline a personalized treatment plan to protect your oral health.

Types of Dental X-Rays
We Recommend

Every patient’s needs are different. The dentist may recommend specific types of dental
X-rays based on your age, oral health, and dental history.

Bitewing X-rays

These images capture the upper and lower teeth together in a single view. Bitewing X-rays are the primary tool for early caries detection, assessment of bone levels in periodontal disease, and checking for decay under existing fillings. They are also used to monitor bone levels over time.

Periapical X-rays

A periapical (PA) X-ray is an intraoral dental radiograph. It focuses on one or two specific teeth from the crown all the way to the root tip. Periapical X-rays are essential for detecting deep infections or root-related issues. They mainly help evaluate abscesses, bone changes, infections, and trauma affecting a tooth.

Panoramic Radiographs & Full Mouth Imaging

These are wide-angle images that capture the entire mouth in a single view, including the teeth, jawbones, sinuses, and joints. Dentists typically recommend Panoramic X-rays to evaluate wisdom teeth, jaw alignment, and overall oral development.

CBCT 3D Imaging & Advanced Technology

If a concern is complex, 2D images may not be enough. In these cases, we utilize CBCT Scan technology. Dentists use modern dental technologies, such as CBCT scan / Cone Beam CT, to accurately identify the concern.

Insurance & Flexible Payment Options

We make quality dental care easier to plan and afford.

FAQs About Dental X-rays

No. Dental X-rays are quick, non-invasive, and designed to be comfortable. Plus, for children, the dentist uses low radiation and helps monitor healthy tooth development.
It depends on your oral health, age, and risk factors. Your dentist recommends them only when needed. Also, X-ray imaging is only performed when clinically indicated and required.
Digital radiography uses lower radiation, produces clearer images, and allows dentists to review results instantly.
An iTero® scan provides a comfortable, mess-free way to capture precise digital images of your teeth in real time, allowing your dentist to clearly show and explain what’s happening in your mouth. It improves accuracy, efficiency, and transparency while creating a digital record that helps track your treatment progress over time.
Yes. Beyond radiation-based imaging, we use an intraoral camera to capture high-resolution images. It is a standard part of our exams to help you visualize the condition of your teeth without any radiation.
