What is Gum Disease Treatment?

What Causes Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is commonly caused by plaque buildup that hardens into tartar due to inconsistent or improper brushing and flossing. Risk factors such as smoking or chewing tobacco, certain medical conditions like diabetes, and hormonal or genetic influences can also increase susceptibility.
Gum disease treatment, also called periodontal therapy, is a form of dental care focused on managing and slowing the progression of periodontal disease; an infection that affects the gums and the bone supporting the teeth.
Periodontal therapy focuses on removing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and preventing damage to the tissues that support our teeth. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. It’s so common that nearly half of adults in the United States experience some form of gum disease.

What Are the Four Stages of
Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

Gum disease develops gradually through four distinct stages.
Each requires different levels of care.
1

Gingivitis (Early Stage)

This is the earliest stage, where inflammation affects only the gums. Gums appear red and may bleed. However, it is reversible with professional cleaning and daily oral care.

2

Mild Periodontitis

As the condition progresses, early bone changes may begin, and small spaces (pockets) can form between the teeth and gums. Treatment at this stage often includes deep cleaning, such as scaling and root planing, to support healing.

3

Moderate Periodontitis

At this stage, patients experience significant bone loss and deeper periodontal pockets. Some patients may notice sensitivity or slight looseness. Care at this stage focuses on controlling the infection and protecting the supporting structures of the teeth.

4

Advanced Periodontitis

At this advanced stage, patients are likely to experience significant bone and tissue damage that threatens tooth stability. Treatment aims to manage the condition, preserve the remaining teeth, and support overall oral health.

How is Periodontal Disease
Treated at Jefferson?

At Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics, every treatment plan begins with a careful evaluation of
your gum health, comfort level, and long-term goals.

Pocket Reduction Surgery (flap surgery)

When deep pockets persist, we fold back gum tissue to remove bacterial deposits from hard-to-reach areas via deep cleaning. After removing the infectious tartar, the tissue is secured back in place. It reduces pocket depth and makes it easy to keep the area clean.

Bone Grafting

This procedure uses fragments of your own bone, synthetic bone, or donated bone to replace bone destroyed by periodontitis. As a result, it helps regenerate lost bone, stabilize the tooth, and support long-term tooth stability.

Gum Grafting

If the patient has severe gum recession, the periodontist takes tissue from another area of the patient’s mouth to cover exposed roots. Gum grafting surgery reduces sensitivity, prevents further decay and bone loss, and improves gum protection.

Guided Tissue Regeneration

This procedure supports natural bone and tissue healing by placing a thin, mesh-like material between the bone and gum tissue. It helps rebuild supporting structures and strengthen teeth affected by advanced gum disease.

Professional Cleaning

This is a routine cleaning to remove plaque and tartar above the gumline to reverse and heal gingivitis. Our hygienists provide education on proper brushing and flossing techniques to maintain results at home.

Scaling and Root Planing

This is a deep-cleaning procedure that targets the bacteria below the gum line. Scaling removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and root surfaces. Root planing smoothens the root surfaces to help the gums reattach.

Antibiotic Therapy

We may prescribe local, time-released antibiotics directly into periodontal pockets to control bacterial infection. Oral antibiotics may also be prescribed for widespread or aggressive infection. This approach complements other treatments for optimal healing.

Laser Periodontal Therapy

We use advanced dental lasers to remove infected tissue and sterilize the gum pockets. This one is a minimally invasive option that often results in less discomfort and faster healing compared to traditional methods.

Insurance & Flexible Payment Options

We make quality dental care easier to plan and afford.
