Winterproof Your Mouth

On December 22, 2015 Written and Reviewed by JDC Content Committee

The cold winter months can take a toll on the mouth: hot beverages can burn the inside of the mouth, colder temperatures can leave the teeth feeling extra sensitive and delicate lips crack and dry with the cold weather. Fortunately, there are ways to combat the effects that the winter months have on the mouth.

Mouth Burns

Reaching for hot beverages like tea, coffee and hot chocolate are a quick solution to warm up, unfortunately these beverages can also burn the inside of the mouth, tongue, gums and lips. To quickly heal a burn to the mouth, you can gargle with a warm salt-water rinse to reduce burning and swelling. Another quick solution is to drink milk, which coats the mouth and provides enzymes that sooth and heal the area.

Sensitive Teeth

Eating cold foods during cold weather can cause extra sensitivity to teeth. There is no reason to worry about not indulging in the treats you like simply because of the weather. Treat sensitive teeth by brushing with desensitizing toothpaste. These specially-formulated tooth pastes help combat tooth sensitivity.

Dry, Cracked Lips

Chapped lips are among the most common effects that winter has on oral health.  Hydration is key to keeping your lips healthy and moisturized. There are several ways to help hydrate and moisturize lips. Drinking water is the best way to hydrate cells from the inside out. It is also recommended to use a moisturizing lip balm with an SPF to protect lips while you are out. Look for products with healing ingredients like calendula or Vitamin E.

Staying on top of the effects of cold weather on your oral health during the winter months can be a challenge. A healthy mouth starts with good every day dental care, and by keeping up with your regular dental appointments.
