Staying Healthy – The Importance of Regular Cleanings When You Have Braces

Staying Healthy When You Have Braces

If you have braces, you probably see your orthodontist regularly, which may make you wonder if you really have to make that regular dental check-up. Surely you keep your teeth clean enough since you have braces, and your orthodontist would notice if something were amiss, right? Actually, there are a few great reasons to keep your regularly scheduled check-up with your dental hygienist. Let’s examine the importance of staying healthy when you have braces.

Watch this video to learn more about oral hygiene and orthodontics from DeShaun, the hygienist at our Carrollton office.

Dental Hygienists Handle Routine Oral Hygiene

You go to an orthodontist for your braces because they specialize in misaligned jaws and teeth. It’s not that your orthodontist couldn’t identify a cavity or teach you about the signs of gum disease, but it’s just not what they’re focused on treating when you see them.

Whereas orthodontists specialize in how to diagnosis, prevent, and correct your overbite or the gap between your front teeth, dental hygienists specialize in routine hygiene and general oral health issues. You need to see your dental hygienist regularly so they can monitor your overall oral health.

Your Teeth Will Love a Professional Cleaning

Let’s be honest, brushing and flossing with braces can be a challenge. Even if you master the best techniques and practice a diligent oral care routine, it is possible to miss some things. At a regular check-up, your dental hygienist can reach those nooks and crannies that you might miss with your braces on.

It’s Safe (and Important) to See Your Dental Hygienist When You Have Braces

Visiting your dental hygienist while undergoing orthodontic treatment isn’t just safe, it’s also important to your overall health. There is a strong connection between your oral health and your overall health, so maintaining a healthy mouth is one way you can fight diseases and viruses. Staying healthy when you have braces is very important.

Remember, you don’t want to go through orthodontic treatment only to end up with cavities because you skipped out on your dental check-ups. It’s never too late to make that change. If you’re due for a regular check-up and professional teeth cleaning, book an appointment with Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics.
