How to Prepare for Your First Appointment at a New Dentist

How to Prepare for Your First Dentist Appointment

You probably did your homework to choose your new dentist. It’s a good idea to make sure you’ve got the basics down before your appointment. Know the address and route you intend to take and prepare to arrive early. Keep in mind the traffic flow could be different depending on the time of your appointment.

Contact your former dentist to obtain your records or have them sent to the new office. You may want to call ahead to confirm the forms arrived along with any x-rays. When you call to check on the transfer of your dental records, you can also confirm your appointment.

Collect your insurance information and complete all patient forms in advance to save time at the office. Completing them in advance also ensure you provide all of the correct information and your answers are thorough.

Don’t forget to brush and floss before your appointment!

Things to Bring to Your First Dentist Appointment

Before heading out the door to your appointment, make sure you have everything you need. Your new dentist will want to scan your new insurance card for their files. You’ll also want the completed patient forms and any dental records you have, including x-rays.

One of the most important things to take is a list of questions and concerns. In the midst of the anxiety and excitement of your first dental visit, it’s easy to forget things. If you create a list, you won’t forget to ask anything. Here are a few questions you may want to ask your new dentist:

  • Do you offer any relaxation techniques like sedation to help ease dental anxiety?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • Do you offer emergency dental or after-hours care?
  • Are there any payment plans or discounts for treatment?

What to Expect at Your First Dentist Appointment

When the day of your appointment arrives, it’s common to feel a little nervous. Your new dental team is eager to meet you and ready to make your visit a success. For routine appointments, you can expect a professional teeth cleaning, x-rays, and a thorough exam.

You should have plenty of time to speak with your new dentist. You can express concerns, like health conditions and allergies to medications, and ask questions. Don’t forget to be forthcoming about any work you’ve had done, problem areas in your mouth, and any treatments you’re interested in pursuing.

Tips for Parents on Your Child’s First Dental Visit

When parents take their children to the dentist for the first time, it can be exciting and nerve wracking. Young children may have difficulty understanding what’s happening. There are some steps you can take to make it easier.

  • Choose a dentist who specializes in working with children.
  • Explain to your child what to expect in terms they will understand.
  • Help your child brush their teeth prior to the appointment to prepare them and set the stage for the appointment.

Even if your children are older and you’re just switching to a new practice, initial trips to the dentist may be challenging. Keep in mind that most kids respond better when they know what’s going on and what to expect.

Don’t Delay a Trip to the Dentist

Whether it’s been a long time since you’ve seen a dentist or you need to find a new dentist, don’t put off that initial dental visit. Part of good oral care includes regular preventative care visits to the dentist.

If you’re in the market for a new dentist, the team at Jefferson Dental Care is ready to help. We are proud to serve our Texas communities from several offices around the state. Contact the office nearest you to make an appointment today!
