before and after braces a healthy happy smile

written by Dr. Lina Aljoudeh, Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics

Braces can be life changing. Everyone wants a bright, healthy smile, but what does that really mean? In general, a healthy smile is defined as straight, white teeth with healthy gums and a good bite. Here’s a list of signs that you may need braces to help you understand if they’re the right choice for you.

When Should My Child Get Braces?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get a check-up with an orthodontist by the time they turn 7. You should do this to give your orthodontist the chance to recommend the right treatment at the right time. Your child has enough permanent teeth, at the age of 7, for an orthodontist to tell if they may have or are developing an orthodontic problem. Putting off an orthodontic consult until all baby teeth have been lost could be harmful, as some orthodontic problems can be prevented earlier or can be more easily and quickly fixed when the jaws are still growing. Of course, If your child is older than 7, it’s never too late for a check-up!

Can adults get orthodontic treatment?

Yes! It is never too late to move healthy teeth. As a result of a combination of advancement in orthodontics and the various orthodontic appliances we offer means we are able to accommodate your lifestyle and help you achieve a happy, healthy smile. We have many treatment options to help suit you, including metal braces, clear ceramic braces, and Invisalign. Fun fact: One in every five orthodontic patients is an adult!

How can braces change your life?

Your smile is your first impression, and getting the smile you’ve always wanted helps you show the world who you really are.

  • Healthy, straight teeth give a boost of self-confidence; you’ll find yourself smiling more! Many studies have shown that a bright smile is a good indicator of success and happiness in life.
  • More importantly, leaving teeth crooked can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • An improper bite can cause tooth wear and difficulty chewing.
  • Last, but not least, braces can help improve your speech through improved pronunciation.

How will I know if I need braces for sure?

The best answer is to schedule a complimentary consultation with your orthodontist at Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics. That way we can address any concerns you may have for your child (above the age of 7), as well as for yourself, if there is anything you don’t like about your smile. Our offices are equipped with state-of-the-art iTero 3D Scanners, which help you see any concern your orthodontist may have and provide a simulation of how your teeth will look after treatment.

Ready to get started? Find your nearest location, then book a free consultation online so we can help you on your journey to a healthy, happy smile!
